Hi everyone! I arrived safely in Honduras on Monday, June 14. I met one of the other supervisors at the airport in Tegucigalpa and we traveled to the city of La Paz which will be our “home base” for the summer.
On Tuesday, we left bright and early for the island of Roatan, a popular diving spot off the northern coast of Honduras. After three buses and a rough ferry ride, we arrived in tropical paradise. We headed out to the West End which was known for its pristine beaches. We found a great little hostel called “Chillies.” We stayed in a little cabin surrounded by tropical plants, including huge mango tree! And, it was a taxing 20 meter walk to reach the ocean waves from the front of the hostel.
On Wednesday, we soaked up some sun and went swimming in the warm azure water. We had an awesome breakfast of huevos rancheros at a beachside place. Tortillas with eggs, beans, cheese and avocado, delicious! In the evening, a few more supervisors arrived for the pre-project vacation.
Thursday involved a beautiful walk along the beach from our town, West End, to the West Bay. After relaxing for a few hours on the more touristy West Bay beach, a couple of us went zip lining. We rode down 13 cables which stretched through a tree canopy. The view was absolutely stunning. We could see the ocean on the horizon as we zipped down.
On Friday, we traveled back on the ferry to La Ceiba. We relaxed that evening in this northern coastal town.
On Saturday it was time to return to La Paz. We mastered the bus system as we traversed from La Ceiba to San Pedro Sula to Comayagua and finally back to La Paz.
Now Amigos has officially begun. We are starting to get ready for the arrival of the volunteers in nine days. I will keep the updates coming.
Be well.
Rachel
